Microcladia Greville

Thalli erect, terete to compressed, corticated, branched in alternate to pectinate pattern, branch apices forcipate. Gland cells present in south coast species. Tetrasporangia exserted in south coast species, tetrahedrally divided. Carposporophytes surrounded by involucral filaments.

Ten species are currently recognised worldwide (Guiry & Guiry 2015), of which two occur on the south coast.

1a. Species growing mostly on Corallines; main axis up to 500 µm thick, appressed against the substratum

Microcladia exserta

1b. Species growing mostly on Gelidium; main axis up to 1 mm thick, erect

Microcladia gelidii
