Polysiphonia sp 4

Description based on a single slide specimen: Plants with creeping base ca. 200 µm wide, upright axes to ca. 13 mm tall and ca. 160 µm wide near the middle; four pericentral cells. Segments in erect axes 1.5-2.5 times as long as broad. Apices with trichoblasts; unbranched when arising close to tip, developing single fork slightly lower down the thallus.

Only female plant seen. Carposporangia ca. 270 µm long and 350 µm wide, carpospores clavate, ca. 75 µm long.

Collections, ecology and regional distribution

Known only from a single collection at Bird Island, Algoa Bay (38).
